Writing & Research
Writing and research give me somewhere to explore subjects in considerably more depth than most of my other work allows.
My interests are fairly broad, so the work collected here won't necessarily fit within a single subject. It includes historical and independent research, books and longer-form writing, practical guides, articles and other publications developed from subjects I want to investigate, explain or simply write about.
Some pieces begin with a specific question I want to answer. Others grow from existing projects or interests. What they share is an attempt to take a subject seriously, research it properly and turn what I find into something worth reading.
Books
Longer-form writing gives me the opportunity to take an idea much further than an article or individual research piece.
This section will bring together books and larger writing projects across the subjects I work on, including both research-led and more accessible non-fiction. Each completed project will have its own page with information about the book, its development and where it can be read or purchased.
Research
I enjoy research that starts with a relatively simple question and gradually becomes much more complicated.
My research work covers subjects I want to investigate in depth, bringing together sources, evidence and competing interpretations to produce a structured piece of work rather than simply an overview of the topic.
American Eugenics and Nazi Eugenic Policy, 1900–1945
Historical Research · 2025–2026
My first major independent research project examined the extent to which the American eugenics movement influenced the development of Nazi eugenic policy between 1900 and 1945.
Originally completed as my Extended Project Qualification, the project examined American sterilisation legislation, immigration policy and prominent eugenicists alongside the development of German and later Nazi racial and eugenic policy.
It was awarded an A* and is being prepared for independent publication.
Guides
Not everything I write needs to be an academic paper or several hundred pages long.
I also produce practical guides designed to take a subject, bring the useful information together and present it in a way that is straightforward to understand and use.
Animal Care Guides
Animal care is one area I intend to develop into a wider collection of practical guides, covering the care, welfare and keeping of different species.
Rather than treating them as short generic care sheets, the aim is to produce useful, well-researched resources that explain both what good care involves and why particular requirements matter.
As the collection develops, individual guides will be published here.
Writing Through My Other Work
A significant amount of my writing also exists within projects elsewhere on this website.
That includes technical and business writing, website content, funding applications, product information and other material produced through businesses and projects such as Container Aerodynamics and Flaming Good Candles.
While I don't intend to reproduce all of that here, selected pieces and examples may be included where they represent a substantial piece of writing or research in their own right.
The Collection
This part of the website is intended to grow over time.
Rather than limiting it to one subject or format, I'll use it to bring together the writing I consider worth publishing — whether that's a substantial research project, a book, a practical guide or something considerably shorter.
As individual pieces are completed, they'll be added to their respective collections and, where appropriate, given their own pages.
