Web Design

Alongside my own projects, I've developed an interest in designing and building websites for businesses, brands and independent ventures.

I primarily work with Squarespace, focusing on clear structure, straightforward navigation and websites that are easy to use without being unnecessarily complicated. I've worked on e-commerce, technical B2B and portfolio websites, each requiring a very different approach to how information is organised and presented.

And if you'd like another example of my work, have a look around — I built this website too.

Websites I've Built

Container Aerodynamics

Business · Technical · B2B

The challenge with the Container Aerodynamics website wasn't simply making something that looked professional. It was working out how to communicate a fairly unusual engineering concept to people who may never have encountered it before.

The site needed to provide enough technical information to be credible while remaining understandable to operators, potential partners and visitors without an engineering background.

As the project has developed, I've continued to adapt the website alongside it — changing the structure, messaging and content as Container Aerodynamics has progressed from early development towards full-scale testing and commercialisation.

My work: Site structure, design, written content, technical communication, mobile layout and ongoing development.

Flaming Good Candles

E-commerce · Consumer · Brand

Flaming Good Candles presented almost the opposite challenge.

With different candle designs, sizes, colours, scents, seasonal ranges and accessories, the website needed a structure capable of supporting a growing product catalogue without becoming difficult to navigate.

I developed the website alongside the wider brand, including its visual direction, navigation, product hierarchy, shop categories and customer information. Building a website for a business I'm also involved in has given me the opportunity to consider the site from both sides — not just how somebody uses it, but how practical it is to manage behind the scenes.

My work: Website design, e-commerce setup, site structure, product organisation, branding implementation, written content and customer information.

Roadhouse Apparel

E-commerce · Retail

Roadhouse Apparel was my first opportunity to build an e-commerce website for somebody else's business.

The project involved taking an existing physical brand and developing the structure needed to sell its merchandise online. Rather than simply creating individual pages, I worked on how the entire range should fit together — including navigation, product categories, shop structure and the wider customer journey.

It was also a useful lesson in the less glamorous side of building websites: incomplete product information, changing requirements, stock considerations and making everything work together before launch.

My work: Squarespace design and build, e-commerce structure, navigation, product organisation, written content and online sales setup.

And This One

Portfolio · Personal

Then there's the website you're currently using.

My personal website presented a slightly strange design problem of its own: finding a sensible way to put engineering, candles, web design, writing, research and creative work under one roof without making the whole thing feel completely disconnected.

It acts as an evolving portfolio of what I'm working on, what I've built and where those projects go next.

But rather than explaining the design to you...

Have a look around.

My Approach

I don't think every website needs to be enormous, complicated or packed with features.

A good website needs to make sense.

That means understanding what somebody visiting it is actually looking for, deciding what deserves its own page, making navigation intuitive and giving the important information enough room to stand out.

Sometimes that means a single-page website. Sometimes it means an online shop with dozens of products. Sometimes it means finding a way to explain an aerodynamic device for shipping containers without requiring the reader to have an engineering degree.

The approach changes with the project.

What I Can Help With

I can help with new websites, existing Squarespace sites and projects that have already been started but need some direction.

Depending on the project, that can include website planning and structure, page design, navigation, mobile layouts, Squarespace builds, online shops, product organisation, written website content, contact forms, basic SEO, policy and information pages, domain setup and preparing a site for launch.

I'm particularly interested in working with small businesses, new ventures and independent projects where the website can develop alongside the business itself.
